Alicia Keys held her ‘Keep A Child Alive Black Ball’ at the Apollo Theater on Thursday night [Dec. 6th]. The charity assists those affected by HIV/AIDS in Africa and India. The event was originally planned for Nov. 1, but was canceled due to superstorm Sandy.

While being interviewed on the red carpet Alicia said:
“There are places in the world where Keep a Child Alive serves where they have a Hurricane Sandy every day. They don’t have electricity, they don’t have heat … and that made me more invigorated to make sure this Black Ball happened.”
Keys’ guests included her mother Terri Augello, and brother Cole Cook. Husband and producer Swizz Beatz attended as well as his brother Andre King.

Whoopi Goldberg emceed the event, and introduced performences by Bonnie Raitt and Alicia Keys who sang a duet version of her song “I Just Can’t Make You Love Me.” Other performances came from Jennifer Hudson and Brittany Howard of Alabama Shakes.
Super Mogul and Philanthropist Oprah Winfrey, was deservedly honored for her school, The Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls in South Africa, which launched in 2007, and other entrpeneur and philanthropic work. ”It’s a universal truth, Oprah makes change happen,” Alicia said about her honoree.
Oprah accepted her award saying:
“You try to keep a child alive and I try to educate them as best as I can, when I look at Africans girls I see myself, I continue to work for them to have the same opportunities that I have. “
